DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER SPEAKS AT WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE ON SEX EDUCATIONThe highlight of the recent Women’s History Month celebration at Westchester Community College was the appearance by Dr. Ruth Westheimer. Her lecture and discussion was followed by a book signing (Sex for Dummies and Sex after 50). The event, which was free and open to the public, was attended by hundreds of individuals including students and members of the community. Her Sexually Speaking presentation covered various human sexuality topics and anecdotes from her career as an advice columnist and commentator on radio, television, and print. “I’m old fashioned: I believe in love and I believe in marriage,” she told the audience. She discussed the need to bury false myths through increased education (“Everyone has an obligation to be sexually literate”) and specifically promoted an increase in human sexually courses at colleges. The frank comments in her lecture, and her answers to questions by the audience, were peppered with humor. “I believe in the Jewish saying ‘A lesson taught with humor is a lesson retained,’” she told the audience. Dr. Ruth first became a household name in the 1980s, thanks to her frank commentary in the media. She has taught as lecturer and professor at Princeton University and New York University, and led a seminar at Yale University. |
