WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE NURSING PROGRAM STUDENTS SCORE SECOND HIGHEST IN
STATE
Students in the two-year Associate Degree in Nursing
Program (ADN) at Westchester Community College posted the second highest
pass rate for the licensure exams as compared to all other state
institutions with such programs. The success rate for the students was 97.3
percent. Out of 37 Westchester Community College students who took the RN
Board exams, 36 passed.
Once students pass such an exam, they can go into the
field as registered nurses or continue their education. Graduates who pass
the exam are prepared to provide bedside and related specialized nursing
care in hospitals, homes, clinics, and long-term care facilities.
“Our faculty members encourage our students to do their
best, and we prepare them for the exam as well as we can,” says Eileen
Karlik, chairperson of the Nursing Program. “We are pleased with the latest
results,” she adds. The pass rate of Westchester Community College students
consistently ranks among the state’s highest.
In response to the need for more nurses, the college
has moved forward to expand its program. This past year, The State
University of New York granted $110,000 toward Westchester Community
College’s plan to increase enrollment in its highly successful Nursing
Program. SUNY’s High Needs Nursing Initiative funding will enable the
college to mentor a new faculty member and to increase the size of Nursing
classes.
There is a serious need for more nurses, both locally
at Westchester’s many hospitals and nationally at facilities across the
country. The college, which provides instruction for students to enter the
workforce or go on to four-year institutions, is attempting to respond to
this need.
The hiring of a new faculty member will be the latest
aspect of the college’s efforts to expand the program. Recently, the program
began offering classes during evenings and weekends, in addition to day
courses. Westchester Community College offers a variety of academic programs
in the healthcare field including ADN, Practical Nursing, Respiratory Care,
and Radiologic Technology Programs.
