Volunteering

These are some of the areas in which our volunteers participate:

Conversation Partners
Once you enroll in the ESL Institute and reach Level 4 or above, you can request a Conversation Partner.  Your partner will work with you one hour a week to improve your English speaking skills.  You work in a relaxed, informal atmosphere on the Valhalla campus, helping to build your confidence and fluency.  This program is provided as a free service by the Volunteer office.

It’s easy to apply for a conversation partner: Pick up an application at the ELI office in AAB-302 or go to the Volunteer Office in Room 243 of Library.

“Something to Talk About” - Group Discussion Sessions
This is a series of small, group discussions led by a facilitator and available to Level 5 students and above.  “Something To Talk About” will give you additional opportunities to practice speaking and will help you build confidence in a group setting.  The Program meets on Wednesdays 12:15 pm and there is no cost to you.

For further information contact Robert Nechols, Director of the ELI, in Room 302 of the Academic Arts Building or come to the Volunteer Office in Room 243 of the Library.

Green Thumbs
Westchester Community College Campus staff and faculty who enjoy gardening will extend their love of planting by helping to beautify our campus. Participants typically will attend several lunchtime planning meetings over the course of the fall and winter as well as an occasional special event and then work towards creating a number of colorful and varied gardens throughout the campus.

Mailings/Special Projects and Events
The Westchester Community College Foundation is looking for people to assist in large bulk mailings. Mailings will take place periodically over the course of a semester and will require a commitment of several hours a day. Work is done together with a group of volunteers. In addition, volunteers are periodically needed to usher at cultural events and to help set up a variety of job, career and scholarship fair functions.

Mentoring
There are two major mentoring groups on campus, the Faculty/Student Mentoring Program and the Women’s Mentoring Program.

The Faculty/Student Mentoring Program offers Westchester Community College students the opportunity to develop a relationship with a faculty member who has volunteered their time to work with the student in assisting them with their academic needs, sharing goals, and discussing any concerns the student may have by becoming an advocate for that student by offering support and counsel and by becoming a role model for that student. For more information, you may e-mail us at FSMP@sunywcc.edu.

The Workplace Culture Coaching Mentoring Program is looking for corporate businesswomen to help mentor female business students. Each business mentor is assigned an individual student mentee. Over the course of a semester the mentees are required to visit their mentors’ corporate environment at least 3 times. The focus is to understand the corporate workplace, to work on professional development and career planning. There is a mentor training session at the beginning of each semester and as well as several student mentee training sessions over the course of the semester.
