Westchester Community College Math Club

About Us

The Westchester Community College Math Club consists of members the Math Team, members of Mu Alpha Theta, and other members who do not choose to participate in the contests but do like to share their enthusiasm and enjoyment of mathematics with others.

The Westchester Community College Math Team currently participates in three academic contests each year: (1) Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), (2) American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC) Student Math League, and (3) New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) Student Math League.

The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) is an international contest for undergraduates. Students are given a real world problem that they have never seen before and have a weekend to come up with a solution. There are no right answers – several different approaches may be correct. Our students compete with students at four-year schools all over the world so it is quite a challenge for them, but one that they enjoy. It is a very valuable experience for them to see how mathematics is used and to apply what they know to a real world situation.

AMATYC and NYSMATYC run math contests every year. Students are asked questions on various math topics – none above the pre-calculus level. They may participate each semester during a given academic year. WCC usually earns a high rank in our region, and on an individual student basis, we have had students placed as high as fifth from the top. Because these two contests are just for two-year schools, and anyone who is interested may participate in them, more of our students are able to compete in the AMATYC and NYSMATYC Student Math Leagues than in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling.

Westchester Community College has established a chapter of Mu Alpha Theta – the national mathematics honors society for high schools and community colleges. Students who meet the criteria for this national society are able to avail themselves of the benefits that are associated with membership.
