The following position requires familiarity with the community college philosophy, and the ability to work within a culturally diverse college population.
TITLE OF POSITION/RANK: Vice President of External
Relations
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: External Affairs
Each semester, Westchester Community College, the largest educational
institution in the county, enrolls more than 13,000 credit students and
another 13,000 non-credit students on the main campus in Valhalla, New York
and at eleven extension locations. A State University of New York
institution, the college is sponsored locally by the County of Westchester.
The Westchester Community College Foundation annually ranks among the
leading fundraising entities for community colleges. The Foundation’s
primary mission is raising funds for the institution. It has just completed
fundraising for the $40 million Gateway Center, an innovative new facility
on the main campus, which will offer educational opportunities for
traditional students, new Americans, and international students.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Vice President of
External Relations is responsible for developing, coordinating and
supervising programs/services such as private and public fund raising,
public relations and information, advertising and marketing, publications,
special events, alumni relations, volunteer coordination, scholarship
administration and the financial management of Foundation funds. The
Foundation, a 501C3 organization, is a separate entity dedicated to raising
private and public funds which are used to aid in an array of student needs.
The individual in this position serves on the cabinet of the President and
participates in the discussion, formulation and interpretation of college
policies. Supervision is exercised over a substantial number of
professional, technical, volunteer and clerical support staff. The
individual in this position would also do related work as required.
Examples of Work:
- As Executive Director of the Westchester Community College
Foundation, under the direction of the Foundation Board, directs and
participates in the solicitation of funds from private and public
sources for student scholarships, emergency aid, tutorial programs,
faculty development and proposed initiatives to provide services not
included in the college's operating budget;
- Develops and implements initiatives to provide public information,
aid in the recruitment and retention of students, increase private and
public funding for scholarships, and to develop faculty in a manner
consistent with the goals and objectives of the college, as well as the
Foundation;
- Directs college fundraising activities through the development of
government grant proposals, monitoring the dispersal of funds for
regulatory compliance, and soliciting annual funds from private and
public sources;
- Manages fundraising activities by supervising and participating in
annual direct mailings, phonathons, and numerous special events
including an annual dinner to raise scholarship funds, the annual
President’s Forum, which has included speakers such as President Bill
Clinton, and the Celebrity Salon Series;
- Manages the operations of the Office of College-Community Relations
which has responsibility for promoting college and Foundation programs
and activities via advertising, marketing, production of collateral
material, and media relations through print and electronic media, the
college web site, social networking, public relations and a variety of
print publications;
- Manages a large volunteer program with individuals who volunteer
time to assist students, faculty and administrators at the college;
- Serves on a variety of community organization boards;
- Oversees the scholarship application, screening and awards process
with the assistance of subordinate supervisory personnel;
- Oversees the alumni development program including directing alumni
events, annual newsletter mailings, direct mail fund-raising, alumni web
site, etc.;
- Oversees the operation of The Native Plant Center;
- Prepares reports for the President and Foundation Board on all
activities involving fundraising, community outreach, public relations,
marketing, and financial and personnel management;
- Coordinates local, regional, state, and national government
relations efforts;
- Leads and/or participates in a number of college committees;
- Works closely with members of the Foundation's Finance and
Investment committees to record and monitor assets and contributions;
- Represents the college and the Foundation in various professional
and community organizations, as well as in the corporate and business
communities;
- Attends meetings, conferences and seminars, as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Masters degree or a post
graduate degree and eight years of related professional experience is
required. The successful candidate must possess thorough knowledge of
fundraising techniques and practices; Thorough knowledge of
principles, practices, policies of education and public administration; Good
knowledge of marketing and public relations techniques and practices; Good
knowledge of the goals, mission and programs of Westchester Community
College; Ability to work with the Foundation Board; Ability to plan,
coordinate and supervise the work of subordinate staff, as well as
volunteers; Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing; ability to
coordinate volunteer activity; Ability to evaluate programs and make
recommendations for improvement; Ability to effectively use computer
applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, calendar, email and
database software.
POSITION EFFECTIVE: Summer 2010
SALARY & BENEFITS: The salary range is
$112,853-$168,227 plus excellent benefits.
