Smart Classrooms
Over the summer, Westchester Community College added twelve new
technology-enhanced classrooms. Six are in the Technology Building, five in
the Classroom building, and one in the Science building. With the completion
of these rooms, we now have thirty-three classrooms and seven mobile carts
on campus that provide first-rate instructional technology. In addition, the
extension sites have added
three SMART Sympodium rooms.
Each room and cart has
an instructor PC, a projector, and multimedia players (DVD and VCR). Many
rooms also have document cameras for projecting printed materials.
Twenty-two rooms have SMART Boards – touch-activated white boards. Seven
contain SMART Sympodium monitors, which use pressure-pen technology. Three
rooms have a PC, digital projector, and multimedia equipment. Some of the
mobile media carts are assigned to specific buildings and are managed by the
Media Services technician in that building; other PC carts can be reserved
from Media Services in advance.
With portable
technology and an internet connection in each classroom, virtually every
room is a potential multimedia, “smart” classroom.
Network Support
- Internet: All workstations are
networked, including the off-site locations, to a high speed internet
connection.
-
Wireless: Presently Westchester Community College has
wireless coverage for 95% of our main campus and coverage at some
extension sites. In our ongoing effort to provide our students the
latest in technology we have wireless access throughout the main areas
of campus which include coverage in all academic buildings except the
Knollwood Center. In addition, wireless coverage is provided in the
green areas between the main academic buildings and around the Library .
The Mt. Vernon and Cross County extension locations also have wireless
access. In the coming year we will continue to improve wireless access
at the extension sites and on the main campus.

Applications Development
State of the art web-based processes have replaced the old voice response (telephone) StarTel and ExpressLine applications. Course availability, bills/transcripts, grades/transcripts, credit card payments and registration are now available via Westchester Community College's web site, StarWorld.
As part of the College's independent initiative, Peoplesoft's Financials and Human Resources applications have been installed. The new system includes general ledger, accounts payable, purchasing, payroll or human resources applications.
