SHARON BUTLER: DENSE SURVEILLANCE, NEW PAINTINGS
In her recent solo exhibition at Pocket Utopia in New York, Sharon Butler’s images of industrial structures on disheveled canvases investigated how contemporary Casualist abstraction could paradoxically amplify early twentieth-century Precisionism’s celebration of industrialism and progress. In her new work, she is considering how excessive overworking of an image might contribute to a painting’s meaning.
