Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles: Summer Reading – June 15, 2018

Colleagues,
Following last week’s article about Hispanic Serving Institutions, this recent Inside Higher Ed article discusses how lower-income students who attend minority-serving colleges are more likely to move up in economic status!
However, despite the availability of financial aid and scholarships, college costs can be hard to manage – even at community colleges where one of their hallmarks is affordability. This podcast covers the complexity of the various ways that governments, nonprofits, and higher education have addressed affordability: https://www.edsurge.com/news/2018-06-12-beyond-tuition-how-innovations-in-college-affordability-are-or-aren-t-helping-students.
Private industry is stepping up, too. Starbucks recently partnered with online universities, Walmart did the same with $1 a day for its employees, and now Discover announced a free college education benefit for employees starting their first day of work.
These movements challenge us to think about how we can make earning a college credential more affordable in innovative ways beyond keeping tuition low and providing more scholarships.
