Colleagues,
This week, our executive leadership team hosted State representatives for discussion on several college initiatives that align with legislative actions that support students in public higher education. Among these are sustainable tuition models, financial support, educational and employment opportunity programs, childcare and more.
Westchester Community College has been designated a Voter Friendly Campus for 2019-2020. This initiative by the Campus Vote Project and NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education recognizes colleges that empower students and fulfill a civic mission. Thanks to participating students, the Office of Student Involvement, and all who supported this effort.
Today, we celebrate the significant contributions of women on International Women’s Day, which also marks the start of our Women’s History Month celebration. This year’s theme recognizes Visionary Women: Champions of Peace and Nonviolence. We thank Professors Ekta Bhatia, Mary Lou Sgro, and Kim Walsh for planning an interesting and educational series of events for our college community this month.
We also honor countless other women who are well known as well as those unsung heroes who walk quietly but make extensive and meaningful impact. One such celebrant is our dear colleague, Beth Seelick, whose professionalism and warmth toward students and colleagues will long be remembered though, sadly, she is now departed.
I look forward to learning about our students’ service learning projects over spring break as well as Staff Development Day programming next week. For those who may not be on campus, I hope your time is filled with activities meaningful to you.
Dr. Belinda S. Miles
