Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles – June 24, 2016
I started my day in Dobbs Ferry at the Mary McCloud Bethune High School at Children’s Village and will close out the evening at Woodlands High School in Hartsdale. Having high regard for Westchester Community College, both schools invited me to be their graduation speaker. It’s an honor to be asked and to address students and families on these special occasions celebrating important achievement. My message offers congratulations and best wishes while conveying the importance of postsecondary education and lifelong learning as well as the Westchester Community College story. Being with students at graduation ceremonies is invigorating and two in one day is extra special!
Yesterday, I met with Janet Langsam, CEO of ArtsWestchester, and toured the organization’s magnificent facility and galleries in White Plains. We had a long, delightful conversation about the arts and its importance to liberal education. She is well aware of Westchester Community College, and we both appreciated this chance to get to know each other better and open doors to future collaborations. I also met with the Yonkers Thrives initiative. With 19% of our entering students arriving from Yonkers, the College is valued as a critical element in the team that can make a positive collective impact on Yonkers youth.
Legislator Francis Corcoran visited the Valhalla campus and praised the college and its role providing college access and workforce development in Westchester County. He met with members of the Foundation Board and a few cabinet members, and we greatly appreciate how generous he was with his time.
Speaking of the Foundation, its Executive Committee met this week and heard from Dr. Sophia Ward and me about the exciting work we’re doing on the student academic journey and new schools, our developmental education work, and the first-year experience. They are impressed with our progress.
Finally, I joined a few of our film students and other members of the college community at the Jacob Burns 15th Anniversary Celebration that honored David Swope, our board member and former chair. A founding member of the Center, Mr. Swope’s generous contributions and leadership to this organization have opened doors to cinematic treasures both for the community and for talented students honing their craft through this great community facility. Kudos, Trustee Swope!
It’s almost July and summer enrollment is still on track to reach our goal. Thanks to everyone for encouraging our students to stay on track to achieve their goals. Fall is not too far away, and now is the time to reach out to continuing students and ask them to select their classes.
Thanks for making it a great week!
