Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles – Spring Forward – March 22, 2017
This week has been neither “spring” nor “recess” at Westchester Community College!
Many thanks to our facilities and grounds crew for digging us out of the snowstorm and keeping the campus safe for our students, employees, and visitors. Thankfully, the weather cleared up for several events in Valhalla this week including a regular meeting of the Board of Trustees and the annual Staff Professional Development Day.
Staff Council awarded its 2017 Staff Excellence Awards to Dorothy Posada of the Gateway Welcome Center and Jeff Paribello of Physical Plant. They earned this high recognition from their colleagues for their work and contributions to the life of the college. Westchester Community College Foundation Chair Ruth Suzman presented Dorothy and Jeff with their awards. Congratulations to both!
Today marked Westchester County’s first-ever TEDx event. TEDxWCC attracted nine exemplary speakers to deliver TED talks to an audience of about 100 students. These talks were recorded for later broadcast on the TED website. Kudos to the college team who produced this event held at the Gateway Center: Publications Assistant and Staff Council President Ed Tatton, Student Government Association President Henry Gulergun, and SGA Secretary Rebecca Brignolo. TED (Technology, Entertainment, & Design), was founded in 1984 to spread ideas through short, powerful talks. For more information on TEDxWCC, visit https://www.tedxwcc.com/.
Next week is the spring 2017 Achieving the Dream site visit with our Leader Coach, Dr. Mary Fifield, and Data Coach, Dr. Donna Javonovich. Some of you are receiving invitations to specific sessions during the two-day visit, and everyone is invited to the open session on Wednesday, March 22, at 11:45 a.m. in Gateway 110. As a member of this national network, we have made a commitment to helping more students succeed, and we are making great strides in readiness, academic progress, transfer, and completion.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Dr. Belinda S. Miles
