Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles: Building Minds and Building Futures
March 30, 2018
Colleagues,
Each week presents a new opportunity to witness or take part in the wide-range of curricular, co-curricular, student involvement, and community engagement activities at the college. What a pleasure it was to be present at several programs, like the school counselor information session and the screening of Tell Them We Are Rising, a documentary examining the history and legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Our people and place were on full display on Tuesday when both SUNY Board Vice Chair Dr. Merryl Tisch and SUNY Chancellor Dr. Kristina Johnson visited our Valhalla campus. In a short afternoon tour, the Chancellor met with faculty and students across a variety of disciplines, including our English Language Institute, Educational Opportunity Center programs that provide pathways out of poverty, and IT, engineering, and energy demonstrations. A spontaneous mini-lecture on laser technology to Prof. Kary Ioannou’s engineering technology class by Dr. Johnson herself was among the many highlights of the day.
While I have been able to reach out and personally thank many of the individuals who took part in the whirlwind tour, every person at the college deserves big thanks for making that day—and every day we change students’ lives—possible. Our commitment to innovation and excellence shined through most impressively!
Ever onward, we look ahead to the Vision and Values Summit next Friday morning. We received a remarkable 1,300 responses to the survey, and I encourage everyone who is able to register and attend.
Dr. Belinda S. Miles
