Instructor of Fashion Merchandising (Tenure-Track)
RESPONSIBILITIES: Westchester Community College’s fashion merchandising program seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track Instructor & Curriculum Chairperson with expertise in the areas of historical development of fashion, fashion/visual merchandising, retailing, fashion forecasting, global sourcing and product development. A strong analytical expertise, especially in the area of buying, financial forecasting using excel and presentation board development, is also desired.
The Fashion Merchandising program combines fashion studies with business courses, and prepares students for positions in resident buying offices, fashion manufacturers, designers’ showrooms, retail stores, fashion publications, and other firms associated with the fashion industry. The Fashion Merchandising curriculum is designed to target students who love style, have an interest in merchandising, or a desire to work in textiles and fashion marketing, and are pursuing a variety of career opportunities in the dynamic, creative, and challenging world of fashion. This position requires full-time teaching responsibilities (12 contact hours and office hours) as well as the mentoring of students in assigned classes. Governance of the Fashion Merchandising department and the College, as a whole, through student advisement, committee work, attendance at faculty meetings, and program assessment is also required. Additional responsibilities, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of an MBA and a minimum of 1 year of teaching experience in the area of retail, fashion, apparel production or merchandising required. Evidence of at least 5 years of college-level teaching experience in fashion industry related classes in an accredited college is strongly preferred. Strong interpersonal skills and administrative leadership skills, demonstrating the candidate’s successful management of an academic program are required. S/he must have proficiency in structuring, delivering, and communicating fashion education using multiple delivery mechanisms, such as lecture, laboratory, computer applications, media techniques and on-line education. The successful candidate must be current with trends in the fashion industry and have connections within the professional field of merchandising and product apparel. S/he must demonstrate teaching effectiveness in the field of fashion merchandising and have standing as a professional in the apparel industry. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to teach financial planning and buying using Excel as well as relevant software and technology programs in the industry at an advanced level, such as StyleSight. S/he must have an understanding of fashion categories from moderate to high fashion and current global developments related to retailing and sourcing. S/he must demonstrate an extensive knowledge of the importance of social media and use of the internet in the fashion merchandising industry and possess the ability to teach financial aspects of buying and costing in the product development arena. Knowledge of Photoshop, Excel and PowerPoint is required. Mastery of course content (historical aspects of fashion and product development) is also required. Additional qualifications include:
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
- Experience and/or academic preparation in teaching fashion classes.
- Experience in computer applications related to fashion as well as computer and peripheral equipment proficiency, such as computer applications in fashion, textiles, apparel manufacturing and design and product development.
- Professional experience in Excel and PowerPoint presentations as well as concept board development.
- Evidence of commitment to remain current in the fashion discipline and its instructional program.
POSITION EFFECTIVE: Fall 2016
SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $57,415 plus excellent benefits.
