Fashion Design Instructor and Curriculum Chair

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:  Fashion Design Department 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Westchester Community College’s fashion program seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track Instructor & Curriculum Chairperson with expertise in the area of Garment Sewing, Fashion Illustration, Textiles, Technical Design and Apparel Construction, both using industrial machines and technology. This position reports to the Chair of the Business Department. The Fashion Design Department teaches the technical, theoretical, professional, critical, and personal skills necessary to sustain oneself in the field of Fashion Design.

This position requires full-time teaching responsibilities (12 contact hours and office hours) as well as the mentoring of students in assigned classes. The position also includes administrative duties pertaining to the successful running of the fashion design program. These include, but are not limited to: working with the department chair and fashion merchandising curriculum chair to help define the vision of the Fashion Department curriculum; writing syllabi and developing curricular materials, mentoring part-time faculty teaching within the Fashion Design program with regard to the responsibilities of monitoring attendance, documentation of student learning, and reporting of grades; active participation in the production of the Fashion Shows, Convocation and Special Community Projects; and working creatively and effectively with a diverse student body. Governance of the Fashion Design department and the College, as a whole, through student advisement, committee work, attendance at faculty meetings, and program assessment is also required. The successful candidate will also assist in placing students in internships. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the department chair.

QUALIFICATIONS:  A BFA in Design or a related field and a minimum of 1 year of teaching experience is required.  A Master’s Degree is also required.  Evidence of at least 5 years of college-level teaching experience in Fashion industry related classes in an accredited College is strongly preferred.   Strong interpersonal skills and administrative leadership skills, demonstrating the candidate’s successful management of an academic program are required.  S/he must have proficiency in structuring, delivering, and communicating Fashion education using multiple delivery mechanisms such as lecture, laboratory, computer applications, media techniques and on-line education. The successful candidate must be current with trends in the Fashion Industry.  S/he must demonstrate teaching effectiveness in the field of Fashion Design and standing as a professional in the fashion design industry. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to teach Design and Garment Construction on a Juki sewing machine, beginning to advanced level. An understanding of moderate, high fashion sportswear, dresses, evening wear, and active wear fabrics and their applications are essential. S/he must demonstrate an extensive knowledge of the design process: story boards, building fabric stories, ability to develop ideas, merchandise store; and possess the ability to draw accurate flats and drape clothes on the fashion figure. Knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, PowerPoint is required. Mastery of course content (technical mechanics of fashion design and sketching) is also required.  Additional qualifications include:

  • Evidence of collaboration with industry, community, and/or professional organizations on curriculum and partnership development.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
  • Experience and/or academic preparation in teaching Fashion classes.
  • Experience in computer applications related to fashion as well as computer and peripheral equipment proficiency.
  • Professional experience in Garment Machine Sewing on industrial Juki machines, Pattern Making, Computer applications in Fashion, Textiles, Apparel Manufacturing and Design and Product Development.
  • Experience in marketing and/or promoting community events.
  • Evidence of commitment to remain current in the fashion discipline, and its instructional program.

POSITION EFFECTIVE:  Fall 2014  (Hiring is subject to the availability of funds)

SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $57,415 plus competitive benefits.
